Young Marine Biologist program

inspiring the next generation of scientists
The Young Marine Biologist Program recognises the Gumbaynggirr People as the Traditional Owners of the land and waters on which we live, work, play, and learn. We honour their enduring care for Sea, Land, and Sky Country, which has supported the region’s rich and unique biodiversity for thousands of generations. As the first scientists and stewards of the marine world, their knowledge continues to shape our understanding of the environment. We are committed to learning with and from Indigenous knowledge, placing it at the centre of our program. We pay our respects to Elders past and present and acknowledge that this land always was, and always will be, Aboriginal land.

Pathways to STEM for regional youth

The Young Marine Biologists Program connects high school students (14 - 18) across the Coffs Coast region with hands-on marine science experiences and local mentors, opening doors to STEM careers and fostering lasting respect for the ocean.
Through in-person monthly sessions, students are connected with experts from around the world, connect with like-minded peers and gain insights into the world of marine scientists.
Our 2026 program is off to a wonderful start with a four hour marine science 101 session and we were privileged to learn from the Ngiyambandigay Wajaarr Aboriginal Corporation Sea Rangers. Upcoming sessions include sharks and rays, turtle rehabilitation, scientific drawing and a coral identification and shading project.
